The Squirrel's Nut Cache - 7/8/2010

The Nut Cache - a collection of recent things I found interesting, or amusing, or nutworthy.

We've got a pile of nuts today, and one includes the majestic møøse! Yes, it is another Møøse story. In this case, a møøse in Maine. This møøse was spotted in a cemetery near Portland, Maine. Perhaps he was visiting a relative's resting place... or the resting place of someone who ate one of the møøse's relative's... or the brother of a sister who was bit by a møøse once. No realli! Mynd you, møøse bites Kan be pretty nasti...

While everyone is watching Arizona and the reaction to their new tougher enforcement of immigration laws, Oregon is quietly dealing with their own illegal immigration issues. Quietly, yes, but quite harshly as well. Oregon is not at all interested in deportation, it seems. Recently, and with very little publicity, Oregon officials had 109 unwanted immigrants from Canada put to death. There will be a memorial service for the deceased this evening at the Galveston Bridge in Bend's Drake Park.

From mammals and birds, we now turn to reptiles. The police dispatcher was very suspicious of a hoax when, at 2 o'clock in the morning, someone called to report a crocodile loose in the city streets. Now, Miami, FL police would have seen such a call as pretty much a routine matter, but this call came in to the police dispatcher in the little town of Gross-Rohrheim, Germany! Well, the call wasn't a hoax. Seems a crocodile had wandered off from a small travelling circus. The wayward reptile was soon reunited with his owners. That little crocodile has no idea how much trouble he'd have been in if he'd wandered off in Oregon instead of Germany!

I read a lot of headlines and news digests each day. I've always been a bit of a "news junkie" going back to when I was in high school. Most news makes me sad, or angry, or annoyed. Tuesday I was reading the police blotter from the Honolulu Star*Advertiser, and there, amongst the brush fires and car accidents, is this little gem of a headline, "Man allegedly threatens 4 with spear." The story is brief, and contains few details, except that the man was arrested for "first-degree terroristic threatening." We must assume that his was an unlicensed military-style assault spear...

I've never been a world-class athlete. Oh, I've played a bit of sports and had my small athletic triumphs, but nothing at the levels that professionals aspire to. I can only imagine what it must be like to have been a champion and to still have that drive and desire, but no longer have the ability that you once had. Former champions sometimes do strange things trying to reclaim that past glory. Sometimes they even get themselves arrested. One year, you're the champ, then one day your being hauled out of the arena in chains. It's a dog-eat-dog world out there.

I can see how this could happen. People make mistakes. Especially when they're drunk. And the guy only missed his house by less than 20 miles. No big deal. But it is a timely reminder that it really is a good idea to lock your doors when you go to bed. Also, you might want to leave a bathrobe on the back of the couch, just in case...

And the Nuttiness goes on and on...

Silliness Is For Sharing

The following conversation is true. The names were changed to protect the silly.

Jonathan
For clarification: a Reformed Baptist Church means one that holds to the 1689 2nd London Baptist Confession of Faith. Your soteriology may be Reformed and your sacramentology Baptistic, but if you don't hold to the 2nd LBC, you aren't a Reformed Baptist. I love John Piper, he is a great Christian, Calvinist, and Baptist, but he is not a Reformed Baptist(and, really, neither am I. My church desn't hold to the 2nd LBC)
Squirrel
I'm not "Reformed" either. All that Covenantalism and amillennialism! Blech!

Of course, there are some who say that those who are not paedobaptist, you're not "Reformed"... Everybody's got lines somewhere...
Jonathan
I'm actually historic (ie post-trib) premil, myself.
And I'd consider you Reformed, just maybe not a Reformed Baptist.
My biggest problem with you is your lack of belief in spork.
Squirrel
Well... there IS no spork.
Jonathan
I'm so sorry you are stuck in your fallacious asporkian heresy. I'll be praying for you, Squirrel.
Daniel
Can you explain to me what spork is? Also, I thought that a Calvinistic Baptist is also Reformed. Please explain this to me further. How can John Piper be a Calvinistic Baptist, but not be Reformed? I would love to know how how he himself feels about that statement. I know how to contact him if I really wanted to press the issue.
Squirrel
Daniel, the answer to your question has to do with an adherence to Covenant Theology. To be "reformed" in the minds of many, you must hold to both Calvinist soteriology and Covenant Theology. While I hold to Calvinist understanding of God's sovereignty in salvation, I am a Dispensationalist, not a Covenantalist. Therefore I am not considered "reformed" even though I'm Calvinist.

I don't know enough about Piper's theology to know why he isn't considered "reformed"
Squirrel
Oh, I forgot to explain the spork. The spork is a fictional eating utensil that combines aspects of a spoon with aspects of a fork. Legend has it that such iconic and legendary fast food restaurants as Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell actually give sporks away to diners. But, since the spork doesn't really exist, these are just fanciful tales told by travelers.

You can read more about the legendary fork here.
Daniel
Thanks for answering my questions. It was very helpful. I thought you were using spork as far as a theological position. Yes, I know what a spork is since I have been working in the public school system these last few years. The kids are given sporks to eat their lunches with.
Squirrel
There is no spork...
Daniel
Yes, there is such a thing called spork. It is a spoon that can also be used as a fork.
Jonathan
Ha, Daniel, for us, spork is a theological position.
Daniel
What theological position is that? All that I know is that I am a Calvinistic Baptist who does also hold to the Reformed theology. Squirrel did not make it as simple as you have just done. Thank you for being so clear and precise. God bless you.
Squirrel
No no, don't be taken in, Daniel! The spork is a myth and a deception! If you look on ancient maps, you see that, at the edges of known areas, the mapmakers would write, "Here there be sporks" as an indicator of the unknown.

There are no reliable historical records that indicate that the spork ever truly existed, and the spork is not mentioned in the Bible.
Daniel
I'm totally confused now! Is the spork supposed to be a theological position as Jonathan said or a supposedly geographical location as you seem to be saying? Other than this, I am not going to be in the middle of a theological or geographical battle between you two. I won't be taken in because I'm no longer interested in this whatever you call it.
Squirrel
Well, I suppose, since the spork does not exist, it can be whatever you want it to be...

A Brief Programing Note

I really need to learn to stop saying that I'm going to publish something "tomorrow!" It always seems that, whenever I do, Providence seems to always dictate otherwise.

This week just seemed to fill with other things, and I haven't had the time to write that I desired. First, my sister and her family were in town over the weekend, which, coupled with the Fourth and all, resulted in lots of fun and too much food, but not much writing. Then yesterday was my birthday & I got a Nook & I've been playing with it and reading books and not doing any writing. And now, here it is, Wednesday afternoon, and I've not posted anything all week... except this, which doesn't really count.

The good news is that the Nut Cache for tomorrow is done, as is The Squirrel Can Cook for Friday. Next week's The Squirrel Can Cook is already in the works.

My few "thoughts on the role of patriotism in the life of the Christian," that I said would be posted Monday, are busy becoming... something else. Something more then a few random thoughts. Stay tuned, there will be something soon?. Yes, "soon."

Also in the works is a long overdue resumption of the Defending Dordt series, as well as the next post in the What A Squirrel Believes series. Plus, sometime before the end of the summer, I plan on doing a book review of Whosoever Will.

So, stay tuned. Busy summer ahead!

Happy Birthday, America!

I'm so grateful to God for allowing me the privilege of being an American. I'll have some thoughts on the role of patriotism in the life of the Christian tomorrow, but for now, let's just all enjoy being Americans.

And I mean no insult to my international readers. There are great places all around this planet, enjoy where God put you, because you're not there by accident, but by the Will and Design of the Sovereign God.

Hey! Save me a hot dog, will ya?
